Do You Need An Attitude Check?

Motivational Business Phrase Quote NoteI can’t recall who first said it, but I have been reminded lately that, truly, “attitude is everything” when it comes to business success!

Let me be clear—I am not talking about pop-psychology, name-it/claim-it spirituality, or spending your day reciting affirmations and declarations as if they are a magic spell of sorts that will perpetually raise your positive vibes and bring you what you want. defines attitude as:

  1. manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind: a negative attitude; group attitudes.
  2. position or posture of the body appropriate to or expressive of an action, emotion, etc.: a threatening attitude; a relaxed attitude.

Interestingly, the word attitude is derived from the Late Latin word aptitudinem, (nominative “aptitudo”) from which we also get the word APTITUDE.

One could conclude that your attitude and your aptitude are closely connected, meaning your disposition directly impacts your capacity for achieving success!

As believers, our attitudes should be fueled by our hope in Christ. Proverbs 23:18 states, “Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off . . .” We know that no matter what happens, we will be alright! Because we have hope in God’s perfect plan for us, we can move forward with a positive outlook and without fear of the future.

While this sounds great, the reality is that despite our best efforts, we all need the occasional attitude check. How’s yours lately?

  • Do you go about your work without grumbling or questioning even when things don’t go according to plan? (Philippians 2:14-15)
  • Do you focus on God as your “audience of one” when you seem to get no appreciation from anyone else? (Colossians 3:23)
  • Do you praise God for the gifts and talents He has blessed you with as you go about your day? (Psalm 139:14)
  • Are you willing to humble yourself and ask for help? (James 4:10)
  • Do you take accountability for your shortcomings rather than try to hide them or make excuses? (1 John 1:9)
  • Do you wait on God when things don’t move as quickly as you would like them to, or do you charge ahead of Him in your own strength? (Romans 8:25)
  • Are you committed to excellence even when you are working on boring tasks or things you don’t like doing? (Daniel 6:3)
  • Do you encourage and inspire others to do their best? (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
  • Do you practice kindness and show forgiveness when someone makes a mistake or you have to give negative feedback? (Ephesians 4:32)
  • Do you focus on sharing the love of Christ with whomever you come in contact? (1 Cor. 16:14)
  • Do you celebrate the success of others, or do you find yourself green with envy? (Romans 12:15)
  • Are you generous with your customers, employees, and others you interact with throughout your business day? (2 Corinthians 9:6)

When we actively guard our minds and hearts, we take ammunition right out of the hands of the enemy and proclaim our faith and trust in the Lord.
