Plan to Succeed in 2015: What’s YOUR Strategy?

What's Your Plan ConceptWe are in the fourth quarter of 2014, and many of us already have our eyes set on holiday plans, trips that need to get booked, festivities that need to be planned, and gifts that need to be purchased.

In the race to get it all done, however, we often forget that this final quarter of the year also sets the strategy and momentum for how we will lead our businesses into a new year of achievements. Many entrepreneurs suddenly adopt an “I’ll get to it eventually” or “there’s still time” attitude toward strategically planning for their business success.

I would argue that this is in part due to the fact that strategic planning can appear to be a daunting task. It requires looking back at what we accomplished during the current year (and everything we didn’t), and, for some of us, it may bring up some emotions we don’t want to deal with.

Perhaps your business didn’t have a great year, and you were short on customers and revenue. Or, perhaps you tried a new marketing strategy, and it ended up costing you more money and time than it yielded results. Of course, it’s also possible that you had a fantastic year, and it’s time to celebrate—in which case, I’d like to congratulate you on a job well done!

In either case, taking inventory of what went well throughout the year and what didn’t is critical to laying a strong strategic foundation for 2015.

At its most basic, we should be asking ourselves two key questions:

  1. What were our most successful projects and strategies?
  2. What didn’t work and why?

It’s easy to conclude that in 2015 we should be doing more of the types of activities we identify as the answer to question #1, and in most cases, we can also easily pinpoint the projects and strategies that didn’t work for us as the first part of our answer to question #2.

Where most business owners get stuck, however, is in trying to find an answer as to WHY certain projects or strategies failed. They built it, marketed it, and hoped it would sell, but when it didn’t, they couldn’t quite figure out the root cause.

Was it their ability to close the sale? Was it their marketing strategy? Or, perhaps it’s the product or service itself that needs improvement.

More importantly, what strategy should be applied next year to turn things around?  Without the proper analysis of what is really causing a business to lose out on customers and revenue, additional opportunities may be lost in 2015.
