Unfortunately, among all this chatter about and push toward marketing related services, no one seems to ask one critical question: “Is Marketing REALLY Your Problem?”

You see, in my experience and backed by statistics, marketing is rarely the main culprit behind business failure.  According to an article published by Intuit in 2012, much can be attributed to a basic lack of business knowledge and poor planning.  The bottom line is that if you don’t know how to successfully run a business, the best marketing strategy in the world won’t save you.

Let’s start with some basic questions:

  • Can you clearly articulate what your business is about and who it is for?
  • Do you understand your competition and what sets you apart?
  • Are you aware of your knowledge/skills gap and have a strategy for bridging it?
  • Do you have a clear business plan and execution strategy?

In order for your business to survive the treacherous terrain of entrepreneurship, it is vital that you learn how to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your business and resolve to get the help you need.  Don’t fall for yet another clever sales pitch on how someone’s marketing or client attraction boot camp will catapult you into six or seven figure business ownership – it just doesn’t happen that way.
