Last week I had the pleasure to spend some time with Christy and Erl Morrell-Stinson of Stellar Impact International, which proved to be a time of revelation, transformation and answer to prayer. I am eternally grateful for their faithfulness to God’s call and couldn’t go without mentioning them here as they served as the inspiration for this blog post. Allow me to explain why.
When I was a teenager, I loved God but was also convinced that if I made a serious commitment for His will to be done rather than mine, He would either send me to a convent or ask me to become a missionary in Africa. As I was talking with Christy and Erl, it hit me like a ton of bricks that this fear of being called on to do big things for God had never fully left me, even decades later. Here I was, accomplished, educated, confident, assertive and seemingly ready to tackle any challenge, yet underneath the surface my mind was waging war with the vision of God for my life and my business. Although quite cognizant of His will, I was so frightened by the enormity of His vision and the role He would have me play that I was only willing to break off a tiny little piece at a time, thus throttling my own progress.
BAM! There it was, all laid out right in front of me and it was this blessed conversation that brought it all to light. It took me a few days to absorb and pray about what had transpired but God wouldn’t stop there. He continued to speak to me during the following days, not only about the topic of fear, but of pride, self-reliance and unbelief. Ultimately, and for His glory alone, this blog post was born.
What He showed me is that most of us are so afraid of giving up control that we never completely let go of the reins and despite being followers of Christ, cling tightly to our own will while praying for His to be done. The truth is, our love and devotion are often conditional, so long as there is no cost or sacrifice. Unfortunately, most of us are severely tested as soon as God’s call leads us outside our comfort zone.
I truly believe that this is the main reason I was so easily beguiled by new age teachings in my youth, a world where evil and sin don’t exist and the idea of following a non-personal god requires no true commitment. You have to admit that the idea of a “universe” that exists to serve us like a bottomless cornucopia of manifested wishes without any personal cost whatsoever sounds rather appealing. The reality is, only personal, intimate relationships (such as Jesus wants to have with us) require compromise and sacrifice of one’s own will so that we may serve others.
What does this have to do with business you ask? You see, I realized that as a Christian entrepreneur I would never see the full glory of the works God wants to accomplish through me unless I let go 100%. Through Erl and Christy, God showed me that I was holding on to the outcome and therefore hampering the power of the message and the accompanying blessing. Rather than being a funnel through which God’s will could freely flow, I chose to operate like a dam and control the flow. How about you? Are YOU trying to control the extent to which God may call on you?
Here are just a few of the ways fear manifests in our lives and keeps us from rising to greatness:
- Fear of rejection – will others like what I have to say? (Romans 8:31)
- Fear of expectation – will I be able to live up to the task? (2 Corinthians 12:9)
- Fear of failure – what will others say if I am not successful? (Jeremiah 33:3)
- Fear of unfamiliarity – what if I don’t have all the answers? (Daniel 2:22-23)
- Fear of loss – what will I be asked to give up? (Luke 9:23-26)
- Fear of greatness – am I really worthy to carry this message? (Exodus 3:11)
We fall prey to giving in to our fears and thus the enemy triumphs as we settle for mediocrity, stay under the radar or grow complacent. This is precisely where he wants us but I am telling you that it is time for a revolution – throw off the shackles and boldly step into your destiny. Don’t give in to the lies about what you cannot do, cannot be or cannot have.
Like me, it may take you many rounds until you can claim victory, but victory you shall have, in the name of the Most High! So for those of you called to starting a kingdom business – turn your back on fear today and take that first step. I promise you that what you stand to lose is far less than what will be lost if your message is never shared as intended.
I pray that this message will encourage you to cling to Him instead of fear and allow Him to lead you, one step at a time, even when you are uncertain as to where your path will lead.
